Waldron secured strong wins at No. 1 singles and No. 2 singles Friday in the championship match of the Shelbyville Girls Tennis Sectional but failed to find a third win and suffered its first loss to a Shelby County opponent all season.

Triton Central swept both doubles matches in straight sets and Anniston Evans pulled out a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over Waldron’s Riley Thurston at No. 3 singles to secure the Tigers their sixth sectional championship since 2017 and third in the last four seasons.

Triton Central’s 3-2 win advanced it to the Center Grove Regional to face Roncalli Tuesday in a semifinal match. Roncalli defeated Perry Meridian, 4-1, to capture its sectional title.

In the other semifinal at Center Grove, Connersville takes on No. 6 Franklin.

The semifinal winners Tuesday return Wednesday for the regional championship match.

At the Shelbyville Sectional Thursday, Waldron blanked Southwestern, 5-0, and Triton Central produced an identical result over Morristown to set up a third meeting this season. The Mohawks defeated Triton Central, 4-1, on April 26, and 3-2 in the championship match of the Shelby County Tournament on May 4.

Waldron found it tougher to defeat Triton Central Friday even without No. 1 singles player Maryrose Felling, who was in the lineup for Wednesday’s win over Shelbyville, but absent Thursday and Friday because of a basketball commitment.

On Friday, Waldron’s Emerson Lindsey defeated Felling’s replacement, Olivia Williams, 6-1, 6-2, and will advance to the State Singles Sectional Tournament next week at Center Grove.

At No. 2 singles, Emily Tyree bested Ellie Gast, 6-1, 6-1.

Triton Central’s No. 1 doubles team of Lauren Grant and Audrey Canter defeated Audrey Berauer and Riley Price, 6-0, 6-3.

At No. 2 doubles, Neve Kahler and Estelle Gearlds produced a 6-3, 6-3 win over Kathryn Ross and Jackie Corlette to set up the final match to be decided at No. 3 singles.

Based on their win Wednesday against Triton Central, Shelbyville’s No. 1 doubles team of Sydney Baker and Sophia Asher qualified for the state doubles tournament which will begin with sectional matches next week at Center Grove.

Five school records tumbled and seven athletes automatically qualified for the regional round of the Indiana High School Athletic Association track and field postseason.

At the Columbus North Sectional Thursday, Waldron junior Will Larrison finished fourth in the 800 meters in a new school record time of one minute, 57.15 seconds. The top three sectional finishers in each event qualified for the Greenfield-Central Regional on May 23. Larrison will have to wait to see if his time gets added to the field.

Waldron senior Braylon Williams (photo) does not have to wait. He threw a personal-best 146 feet, one inch to finish third in the discus throw behind Center Grove’s Levi Jones (154-8) and Columbus North’s Drew Schiefer (150-7).

Williams also finished seventh in the shot put with a best throw of 44-0.5.

Also scoring top-10 finishes at the Columbus North Sectional were Southwestern’s 400 relay team (eighth in 48.32), Waldron’s 1,600 relay team (seventh in 3:38.73), Southwestern’s 1,600 relay team (ninth in 3:52.96), Waldron’s Lucas Shaw (ninth in high jump at 5-8) and Southwestern’s Avery Dennison (tenth in high jump at 5-6).

Greenfield-Central Sectional

Timing issues occurred Thursday just after the start of the running events which postponed them to Friday. The field events were completed Thursday and Shelbyville senior Ethan Lambert advanced to the regional.

Lambert finished third in the discus at 155-2 behind Roncalli’s Seth Brosseau (173-10) and Indianapolis Lutheran’s Cameron McHaney (172-3). Lambert is the only Golden Bear to advance.

Four Triton Central athletes broke four track and field records Friday.

Sprinter Brayden Wilkins (photo) won the 100 meters in a school record 10.79. The senior also finished second in the 200 at 22.12 – also a school record.

Sophomore Zeke Robertson (photo) won the 300 hurdles in 40.36 to set a new school record. He also placed fourth in the 110 hurdles in 15.54.

Wilkins and Robertson will both participate in the Greenfield-Central Regional on May 23. The duo ran with Cash Compton (photos above, top) and Braden Brown (photos above, bottom) and finished fourth in the 400 relay in another school record time of 43.22. The quartet also will wait for a call back to the regional if a spot is available.

Also scoring top-10 finishes at the sectional were Shelbyville’s Ben Price (tenth in 400 at 53.19; tenth in long jump at 19-8.25), Elias Slaven (tenth in 800 in 2:11.85), Shia Veach (eighth in 3,200 in 10:35.06) and Jaylen Eads (seventh in pole vault at 11-6), Triton Central’s Ethan Cales (fifth in 110 hurdles in 15.69), Willy Baugh (ninth in shot put at 44-10) and Ben Wilkins (tenth in discus at 133-5), Shelbyville’s 400 relay team (sixth in 45.04), Morristown’s 400 relay team (tenth in 48.33), Shelbyville’s 1,600 relay team (sixth in 3:36.19), Triton Central’s 1,600 relay team (seventh in 3:43.90), Morristown’s 1,600 relay team (ninth in 3:57.43), Morristown’s 3,200 relay team (sixth in 9:09.75) and Shelbyville’s 3,200 relay team (seventh in 9:32.29).

Shelbyville Regional

Shelbyville freshman Sonora O’Connor and Morristown freshman Brooklyn Carlton will compete Tuesday in the Shelbyville Girls Track and Field Regional at McKeand Stadium.

O’Connor finished fourth at the Warren Central Sectional to miss the automatic qualifying berth by .4 seconds. She was added to the regional field and her sectional time of 48.36 has her eighth fastest in the field of 16.

Carlton placed eighth at the Warren Central Sectional but was one of five athletes to clear 4-10 at the meet. She is seeded 12^th at the Shelbyville Sectional.

Class 2A, No. 4 Triton Central put together a six-run third inning which proved to be enough run support for Bryce Haney to close the win that sealed the Indiana Crossroads Conference championship.

Haney allowed six hits and two walks while striking out eight to lead Triton Central to an 11-3 win Thursday at Indianapolis Lutheran.

Eli Sego had three hits, two runs scored and two RBI for Triton Central (22-3, 13-1 ICC). Weston Smith had two hits and two RBI. Nick Riggins also had two hits.

Nate Hughes had two hits for Lutheran (12-14, 9-5 ICC), who finished third in the ICC standings behind 2A No. 7 Cascade (18-4, 12-2 ICC).

Waldron 5, Edinburgh 1

At Waldron Thursday, Jacob Bennett allowed just two hits and one unearned run while striking out 10 to lead the Mohawks (14-8, 8-4 Mid-Hoosier Conference) to a third-place finish in the conference standings behind Hauser and South Decatur.

Troy Atwood and Keith Settles each had two hits. Jackson Kuhn drove in two runs for Waldron.

Silas Cooney had the only hit for Edinburgh (10-12-1, 4-8 MHC).

Alexandria 10, Southwestern 2

At Alexandria Friday, Will Rowland and Aaron Matthews each had two hits and drove in two runs to lead the Tigers to a win over the Spartans (2-17).

Alexandria pitcher Kaed Abshire scattered six hits and struck out six to improve the Tigers to 17-10 this season.

On Thursday, Southwestern defeated Indianapolis Tech, 9-8.

Hauser 6, Morristown 0

At Hauser Thursday, Sam Louden pitched a three-hit shutout and struck out 10 to lead the Jets to a perfect 12-0 record against Mid-Hoosier Conference opponents.

Stryker Gill and Simeon Wasil each had two hits. Grady Niccum drove in two runs.

The Jets are 16-9 this season.

Morristown closed out its regular-season schedule with a 5-16 (1-11 MHC) record.

Boys golf

Oldenburg Academy 208, Triton Central 211

At Hillcrest Golf Course Thursday, Max Ray shot 47 to earn a co-medalist honor and lead Triton Central in the dual match.

Also scoring for the Tigers were Derreck Uhls (52), Garrett Eberhardt (56) and Colton Ayers (56).

Softball

Bethesda Christian 4, Triton Central 3

At Bethesda Christian Thursday, Triton Central starting pitcher Lilli Fillippinie broke her own school record with 18 strikeouts in a game but the Patriots scored two runs in the sixth to tie the game and pushed across the game winner in the seventh.

Fillippinie allowed three hits and all four runs were unearned.

Hailey Harris had two hits and scored two runs for Triton Central (14-8). Makinah Noel drove in two runs.

Bethesda Christian is 13-10.

Indianapolis Cathedral 3, Shelbyville 0

At Cathedral Thursday, Anna Moore led off the Irish first inning with a solo home run which proved to be enough run support for Sidney Feczko, who limited the Golden Bears to one hit in a shutout victory.

Feczko struck out nine to improve Class 4A, No. Cathedral to 23-3.

Kali Laycock had the only hit, a first-inning single, for Shelbyville (15-9).

Edinburgh 12, Waldron 2

At Waldron Thursday, the visiting Lancers scored multiple runs in four of the five innings to pin the loss on the Mohawks.

Breanna Barton had two hits and drove in a run for Waldron (5-10, 2-8 MHC).

Eloise Cox pitched four innings, allowed four hits and struck out for Edinburgh (8-11, 6-4 MHC).

Kyah Streeval had three hits, scored three runs and had five RBI.

Morristown 13, Jac-Cen-Del 6

At Jac-Cen-Del Thursday, the visiting Yellow Jackets scored 10 runs in the fourth inning to secure the victory.

Alexia Rogers had three hits, including two doubles, scored two runs and drove in two runs for Morristown (8-10). Nevaeh Cox, Mykynzy Smith and Abby Hawk each had two hits.

Hawk earned the win in the pitcher’s circle.

The first Quarter Horse trials of the season kicked off Thursday at Horseshoe Indianapolis to set up the final for the $99,200 Harley Greene Derby Final set for June 1.

The very first trial had special meaning for owner-trainer-breeder Ricardo Martinez, who saddled Nachor Secret (photo) to an open length victory.

“This win is a special one today because we lost his (Nachor Secret) mother earlier today at the farm,” said Martinez. “It was a rough morning. We did everything we could to save her. It’s very hard to lose a horse. We have another foal out of her, a filly, and I’ve already retired her, and we’ll use her as a brood mare.”

Martinez noted that he purchased the mare, Eyes a Favorite, a daughter of Favorite Cartel, from a sale and raced her a couple times at Horseshoe Indianapolis. He detected something wasn’t quite right, so they stopped with her.

“We could tell something wasn’t right and she had an eyesight problem,” added Martinez. “We finally figured out she couldn’t see well.”

Nachor Secret returned in the Harley Greene Derby Trials for his three-year-old debut and was impressive from gate to wire. Ridden by Martin Munoz, the son of Martinez’s standout sprinter Habits Secret rallied out of the gate early and was authoritative to repel his challengers, scoring the win by one and one-quarter lengths in 17.713 seconds.

Beach Shaker and Alonso Rivera finished second over Malibu Beach and Giovani Vazquez-Gomez for third.

Nachor Secret now has three career wins in seven starts and has only missed the board one time in those outings. Martinez sees a lot of potential in the gelding.

“He was a menace last year and we had to cut him (geld him),” said Martinez. “I can see a big difference in him this year. He is focusing a little better already. He had the winter off and that helped him too.”

Martinez has a deep history with the Harley Greene Derby. He won the event in 2019 with First Habits. He is another foal by Habits Secret, who Martinez campaigned to 10 wins and more than $330,000 before retiring him to stud at Midwest Equine and Veterinary Hospital in Trafalgar, Ind. The Graded Stakes placed stallion was ranked fifth among all freshman sires in the nation in 2018 from a small crop and continues to produce stakes winners each year.

The trials also brought back the return of 2023 Indiana Quarter Horse of the Year Red Headed Beach (photo), who was a winner by a short nose over Martinez’s Sin Tachas Secret and Munoz. Rolando Pina rides Red Headed Beach for owner Pattie Marshall and trainer Tim Eggleston. She is now seven for eight in her career and scored the win in 17.914 seconds as the second fastest qualifier behind Nachor Secret for the Greene Derby Final.

The final trial was another victory for Martinez and Munoz as they teamed up yet again with a son of Habit’s Secret. Tin Knocker (photo), owned by Gerardo Corral, took over in the final strides to score the win by a head bob over Ima Jess Dashing and Edgar Diaz in a time of 17.921. It was also the 2024 debut for Tin Knocker who paid $13.20 for the win.

The final field for the Harley Greene Derby, with jockey and time, includes: Nachor Secret (Martin Munoz, :17.713); Red Headed Beach (Rolando Pina, :17.914); Tin Knocker (Martin Munoz, :17.921); Sin Tachas Secret (Martin Munoz, :17.933); Ima Jess Dashing (Edgar Diaz, :17.940); Beach Shaker (Alonso Rivera, :17.953); Jess a Riot (Aron Hunt, :18.013); Malibu Beach (Giovani Vazquez-Gomez, :18.036); Run the Beach (Diego Villamil Bocanegra, :18.073); and Beach Bay (Giovani Vazquez-Gomez, :18.091).

Martinez will saddle three for the final (Nachor Secret, Tin Knocker, Sin Tachas Secret). Claudio Barraza saddles two (Ima Jess Dashing, Beach Shaker) along with Jessi Vazquez (Malibu Beach, Beach Bay).

The 22^nd season of live Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing extends through Nov. 14. Racing is held Monday through Thursday at 2:10 p.m. Six all Quarter Horse dates are set for 10:45 a.m. on the following Saturdays: June 1, June 29, July 20, Aug. 10, Aug. 31, and Oct. 5.

Indiana’s featured event, the Grade 3 $300,000 Indiana Derby is set for July 6 with a first post time of noon.

Triton Central advanced to the semifinal round of the IHSAA Shelbyville Girls Tennis Sectional Wednesday with a 3-2 win over the host Golden Bears.

Triton Central was victorious at No. 1 singles and No. 3 singles and added a three-set win at No. 2 doubles to secure the victory.

Shelbyville’s only singles win came from Ava Muckerheide at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-1.

Shelbyville Sydney Baker and Sophie Asher won at No. 1 doubles, 6-2, 7-5, and advanced to the state doubles sectional tournament next week at Center Grove.

At Barnett Field in Shelbyville, Gavyn Fisher twirled a four-hit shutout to get the Golden Bears a split of the Hoosier Heritage Conference series with the Cougars (10-12, 7-7 HHC).

Grantland Fitzgerald had two hits and scored twice on singles by Dalton Jones and Brock Kuhn.

Shelbyville improved to 14-8 and closed its HHC schedule with a 9-5 record.

Softball

New Palestine 9, Triton Central 0

At New Palestine, University of Kentucky recruit Allie Blum smashed two home runs and drove in seven of the Dragons’ nine runs.

Blum had three hits in the win and scored two runs to push Class 4A, No. 3 New Palestine to 19-3 this season.

Cailyn Hurst limited the Tigers (14-7) to two hits over six innings and struck out eight. Sadey Hughbanks pitched a scoreless seventh inning.

Brylie Couch took the loss for Triton Central, allowing six hits and nine runs (five earned).

Warren Central Sectional

Shelbyville freshman hurdler Sonora O’Connor finished fourth in the 300 hurdles in 48.36 to just miss the automatic regional qualifying spot. She could still be added to the regional field if hurdlers opt out of the race. O’Connor also finished sixth in the 100 hurdles (17.94).

Shelbyville senior Ava Wilson finished fifth in the 200 meters in 27.4.

Shelbyville freshman Alyna Castanon placed eighth in the 400 (1:05.46) and eighth in the long jump (14-9).

Triton Central’s Vivian Blye finished sixth in the 200 (27.53) and Farah Coen placed eighth in the shot put (30-0).

Morristown’s Brooklyn Carlton finished seventh in the 100 hurdles (17.99) and sixth in the 300 hurdles (51.49).

Also for Morristown, Anna Osborne was seventh in the long jump (15-4.75) and Kindall Dorsey was seventh in the discus (85-5.5).

Warren Central won the sectional team title with 146 points. Franklin Central was runner-up at 145.5.

Shelbyville finished seventh at 25. Morristown (11) was eighth and Triton Central (4) was 10^th.

Jake Garrison and Brock Wischmeyer each shot 38 to lead Shelbyville golf to a dual match win over Whiteland Tuesday at Blue Bear Golf Club, 158-193.

The Golden Bears’ team score was a season best.

At Triton Central, the host Tigers took advantage of five Lutheran errors to never trail in a win that secured at least a share of the Indiana Crossroads Conference title.

Class 2A, No. 4 Triton Central (21-3, 12-1 ICC) got another strong performance on the mound from Hayden May, who allowed just three hits and struck out 10.

Mathew Shircliff had two hits and scored three runs. Brayden Hoover and Kellan Dishman each drove in two runs.

Hudson Mills took the loss for Lutheran (12-12, 9-4 ICC).

Greenfield-Central 5, Shelbyville 0

At Greenfield-Central, Landon Brooks tossed a one-hitter and struck out seven to bring an end to the Golden Bears’ 8-game win streak.

Gavin Markus had two hits and drove in two runs to lead the Cougars (10-11, 7-6 Hoosier Heritage Conference).

Aiden Smith took the loss for Shelbyville (13-8, 8-5 HHC). The sophomore pitched 5.1 innings and allowed six hits and three walks while striking out seven.

Softball

Shelbyville 6, Carmel 0

At Shelbyville, the Golden Bears scored four runs in the first inning without a hit and Addison Stieneker added a two-run home run in the fifth inning to send four seniors out with a win on Senior Night.

Carmel starting pitcher Emily Smith hit Cheyenne Eads to start the bottom of the first inning then walked the next four hitters before settling down. Addysyn Wettrick’s  ground out plated the fourth run to spot Eads an early lead.

Eads allowed four hits and walked three while striking out 12 to push the Golden Bears to 15-8 this season.

Stieneker’s home run, her sixth of the season, was Shelbyville’s only hit off Smith.

Carmel lost its sixth straight to drop to 8-20.

Shelbyville is at Class 4A, No. 4 Indianapolis Cathedral (22-3) Thursday.

Franklin Sectional

Track and field athletes from Southwestern and Waldron did not secure a top-3 finish at the sectional to advance to the regional round, bringing an end to their seasons.

Waldron’s Riley Price finished 10^th in the 300-meter hurdles in 56.43.

Shelbyville High School’s boys basketball program will conduct a summer youth basketball camp June 3-5.

The camp is for incoming first- through eighth graders and will be conducted by the Golden Bears coaching staff.

Cost of the camp is $30 and includes a camp T-shirt. Payment may be made by cash or check made out to the Golden Bear Booster Club.

Incoming first- through fourth graders meet from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. June 3-5 at the Shelbyville High School auxiliary gymnasium.

All fifth- through eighth graders will follow from 1:45 to 3 p.m.

The camp will include small group periods that focus on fundamental skills like shooting, passing, ball-handling, defense and rebounding. There also will be 3-on-3 and 5-on-5 scrimmages as well as skills competitions.

Shelbyville and Triton Central will open the 2024 Indiana High School Athletic Association girls sectional tournament Wednesday at Shelbyville High School.

On Monday, the IHSAA announced the sectional pairings for the 49^th Annual Girls Tennis State Tournament. A total of 311 schools will vie for the state championship.

Sectional tournaments begin today at some sites and will be completed by Saturday. The 64 team sectional winners will advance to regional play May 21-22 at 16 sites.

Shelbyville is again the sectional host for all the Shelby County girls tennis programs. The Golden Bears open the tournament Wednesday against Triton Central, a team they defeated 3-2 on April 13.

The winner of the Shelbyville-Triton Central match moves on to Thursday’s semifinal round to face Morristown. In the other semifinal Thursday, Waldron takes on Southwestern.

The sectional championship match is Friday at Shelbyville High School.

Waldron is 6-0 this season against the sectional field including two wins over Triton Central and a win at Shelbyville.

The Shelbyville Sectional champion will advance to the Center Grove Regional to face the Perry Meridian Sectional champion. The four-team Perry Meridian Sectional features semifinal matches of the host Falcons against Southport and Decatur Central battling Roncalli.

In the other semifinal of the Center Grove Regional, the sectional champions from the Connersville Sectional and the Center Grove Sectional square off.

The four-team Connersville Sectional has semifinal matches of Union County vs. Rushville and Connersville vs. Franklin County.

The six-team Center Grove Sectional has two top-20 ranked programs and they meet in the first match. Franklin, ranked No. 6, takes on No. 14 Center Grove with the winner advancing to face Indian Creek.

In the other quarterfinal match, Greenwood Christian takes on Greenwood with the winner advancing to face Whiteland in the semifinals.

Shelbyville scored four runs in the first inning on one hit and Cheyenne Eads struck out 14 while reaching another pitching milestone in the Golden Bears’ 4-0 win over Greenfield-Central.

With Eads’ fifth strikeout of the game Monday, the senior collected career strikeout No. 600. She is the only Golden Bear pitcher to reach 500 and now 600 career strikeouts.

In another dominant performance, the University of Indianapolis commit allowed three hits and walked three. Only one Cougar reached base over the final four innings as she completed the shutout and locked her team into no worse than a third-place finish in the Hoosier Heritage Conference standings.

Greenfield-Central starting pitcher Ailea Dowdy hit two Golden Bears and walked another in the first inning before Addie Heacox took over in the circle.

Eads had already scored on a wild pitch. Anna Shearer came home on Hailey Maulden’s single. Kali Laycock scored on a wild pitch and Sydney Brown grounded out to score Grace Crafton for all the run support Eads needed.

Eads surrendered two walks and a double in the first inning but kept the Cougars off the scoreboard with her first two strikeouts of the game. In the second, she struck out the side to reach 600 career strikeouts.

The first two Cougars reached base in the third but Eads quickly shut the threat down with a pair of strikeouts and a ground ball back to her in the circle and Greenfield-Central (11-9, 2-5 HHC) never threatened again.

Meanwhile, the Shelbyville offense struggled against Heacox, a freshman just like Dowdy. She scattered five hits and walked three in an impressive performance.

The Golden Bears finished 5-2 against HHC opponents and are tied with Class 3A, No. 7 Yorktown (18-2, 4-2 HHC) with two losses in the standings.

Class 4A, No. 3 New Palestine (18-3, 6-0 HHC) has clinched at least a share of the HHC title. The Dragons host Delta (3-18, 1-5 HHC) Friday.

Class 4A, No. 15 Pendleton Heights (15-9, 4-1 HHC) is at New Castle (6-15, 0-6 HHC) today and hosts Yorktown Thursday. If Yorktown defeats the Arabians, there would be a three-way tie for second place with Shelbyville.

The Golden Bears’ final home game of the regular season is tonight against Carmel (8-19). First pitch following the Senior Night celebration is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Shelbyville (14-8) closes out its regular-season schedule at 4A, No. 4 Cathedral (22-3) Thursday and at 4A, No. 11 Center Grove (18-6) Saturday.

Shelbyville 8, Warren Central 7

At Warren Central, the visiting Golden Bears scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to advance their win streak to eight straight.

Luke Jackson and Grantland Fitzgerald drew walks in the top of the seventh and Aiden Smith followed with a triple to tie the game at 7-all. Dalton Jones then plated Smith with his third hit of the game for Shelbyville’s first lead since surrendering six runs in the second inning.

Kohen Myers pitched two scoreless innings in relief of starting pitcher Reece Prickett to earn the win. Prickett allowed eight hits and all seven runs (only four were earned) and struck out five.

Smith had two hits, a walk and scored two runs in the win.

Shelbyville (13-7, 8-4 Hoosier Heritage Conference) travels to Greenfield-Central (9-11, 6-6 HHC) today for the start of a two-day, two-game conference series.

Triton Central 3, Oldenburg Academy 2, 8 innings

At Triton Central, Blaine Raider scattered nine hits and struck out six to put the Class 2A, No. 4 Tigers in position to win. Logan Plew secured the final out of the eighth inning, though, and Triton Central pushed the game-winning run across the plate in the bottom half of the inning to improve to 20-3.

Eli Sego had three hits for Triton Central. Mathew Shircliff and Bryce Haney each drove in a run.

The Tigers host Indianapolis Lutheran (12-11) today.

Hauser 14, Morristown 4

At Morristown, the visiting Jets scored in every inning to secure the Mid-Hoosier Conference regular season championship.

Simeon Wasil had three hits, including two triples, scored three runs and drove in two in the victory. R.J. Foster, Joel Bechtel and Nathan Linke each had two hits.

Wasil earned the win on the mound, pitching six innings, allowing five hits and striking out 13.

The Jets improved to 15-9 overall and are 11-0 against MHC foes.

Morristown (5-15, 1-11 MHC) tries to avoid the conference sweep Thursday at Hauser.

Waldron 13, Edinburgh 3

At Edinburgh, the visiting Mohawks scored six runs in the fifth inning and six more in the seventh to defeat the Lancers.

Jacob Bennett had four hits, including three doubles, and drove in two to lead Waldron (13-8, 7-4 MHC). Keith Settles had three hits and scored three runs. J.D. Smith, Jackson Kuhn and Jordan Bennett each had two hits. Jordan Bennett had a two-run home run.

Bennett earned the win on the mound, pitching the first five innings and not allowing a hit while striking out 11. Jordan Bennett pitched the final two innings to close out the victory.

Gabe Bennett took the loss for Edinburgh (10-11-1, 4-7 MHC), who will travel to Waldron Thursday for the second game in the MHC two-game series.

Trinity Lutheran 6, Southwestern 3

At Trinity Lutheran, the host Cougars scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to steal the win from the Spartans (2-16).

Jackson Trueblood, Levi Pottschmidt and Chase Bode each had two hits for Trinity Lutheran (9-11). Bode earned the win in relief of starting pitcher Peyton Pollert, who worked 5.2 innings and allowed four hits and three runs.

Southwestern hosts Tri (1-14) Wednesday.

Boys golf

Indiana Crossroads Conference Tournament

At Winding Ridge Golf Course in Lawrence, Triton Central finished fifth in the team standings at 365. Lutheran captured the conference title with a 326. Speedway (344), Indianapolis Ritter (361) and Indianapolis Scecina (363) rounded out the top five with Triton Central.

Lutheran’s Caden Perkins was the medalist with a 78.

Chase Chandler led the Tigers with an 83 which left him sixth in the individual standings and part of the All-Conference Team.

Also competing for Triton Central were Derreck Uhls (90), Garrett Eberhardt (92), Max Ray (100) and Taggy Goul (104).

Shelbyville 164, Connersville 168

At Bear Chase Golf Club, Jake Garrison led the Golden Bears with a 38 to earn the medalist honor.

Also on the Shelbyville scorecard were Logan Reinhart (39), Logan Tobian (43), Brock Wischmeyer (44), Ethan Hughes (47) and Kameron Timberlake (49).

Softball

Triton Central 10, Batesville 6

At Triton Central, Jalynn Keith had four hits, scored two runs and drove in two to lead the Tigers to their 10^th-straight win.

Jayda McKee had three hits and Makinah Noel had two hits and scored two runs.

Lilli Fillippinie earned the win in relief of starter Madi Peterson. The junior pitched 5.2 innings and struck out 10.

Triton Central (14-6) puts its win streak on the line today at Covenant Christian (11-8).                        

Edinburgh 12, Waldron 1

At Edinburgh, the host Lancers scored 11 runs in the second inning to collect the MHC victory.

Kenna Streeval pitched four innings and did not allow a hit or a run while striking out six. Kyah Streeval allowed two hits and one run in one inning of work.

Kenna Streeval had three hits and six RBI. Eloise Cox had two hits and three RBI.

Alyssa Benson took the loss for Waldron (5-9, 2-7 MHC).

Edinburgh improved to 7-11 (5-4 MHC). Waldron hosts the Lancers Thursday.

Hauser 8, Morristown 0

At Morristown, Paige McDaniel allowed just two hits and struck out 14 to secure the MHC championship for the Jets.

Isabelle Brunner and McDaniel each had three hits in the first game of a doubleheader. McDaniel drove in three runs.

Abby Hawk took the loss for Morristown.

Hauser 15, Morristown 1

Lucie Asher had three hits while Brunner and Maley Jordan each drove in three runs to complete the sweep of the Yellow Jackets (7-10, 4-6 MHC).

Haven Hartwell pitched four innings and allowed three hits while striking out five for the Jets (18-6, 12-0 MHC).

Mykynzy Smith took the loss for Morristown.

The Yellow Jackets are at Jac-Cen-Del (6-11) Thursday.

With hits in all five games, Katie Mathies helped DePauw softball win the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament in Greencastle, Indiana.

The Tigers opened the postseason tournament Thursday with an 8-0 win over Wittenberg. Mathies, a Shelbyville graduate, had a single, two walks and drove in two runs.

DePauw returned to the field Thursday and lost to Hiram, 3-1. Mathies had two hits and a walk.

In an elimination game Friday, DePauw defeated Denison, 5-1. Mathies had a single, a walk, scored two runs and drove in a run.

DePauw then defeated Hiram, 12-5, to set up a winner-takes-all championship game Sunday. Mathies had a single, stolen base, scored a run and drove in a run.

In the championship, Mathies had two hits including a solo home run, scored two runs and had three RBI in DePauw’s 10-8 victory over Hiram.

The tournament title was the seventh in program history for the Tigers and earned them an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.

Mathies’ performance earned her a spot on the NCAC All-Tournament Team.

DePauw will serve as the host site for a four-team NCAA regional beginning Thursday. The Tigers (28-14-1) will face St. Mary’s (Minn.) (31-9) in their first game of the double-elimination regional.

The other two teams competing will be Coe (31-9) and Baldwin Wallace (25-14).

Here is a look at other Shelby County graduates competing at the collegiate level.

Karissa Hamilton

The Shelbyville graduate went 0-for-3 at the plate Tuesday in Kentucky’s 7-2 loss to Ole Miss in the opening game of the Southeastern Conference Tournament.

The loss dropped the Wildcats to 30-22 this season.

On Sunday, Kentucky learned it will head to Stillwater, Oklahoma, to compete in one of 16 NCAA regional tournaments. The Wildcats will face Michigan Friday with the winner advancing to face either Oklahoma State or Northern Colorado.

Kylee Edwards

The Shelbyville graduate went 0-for-2 in her SEC Tournament debut Wednesday in Mississippi State’s 8-4 loss to South Carolina.

The Bulldogs are 33-18 and headed West for the NCAA Tournament.

On Sunday, Mississippi State was assigned to the Stanford Regional in Palo Alto, California. The Bulldogs open the tournament Friday against Cal State Fullerton. The those teams met in February at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic where Mississippi State prevailed 4-2.

The winner advances to face with Stanford or Saint Mary’s (Calif.).

Cory Taylor

The Shelbyville graduate had a single, two walks, scored two runs and drove in a run Friday for Eastern Michigan in a 10-9 win over Bowling Green.

Taylor had three hits Saturday in a 7-1 loss to the Mid-American Conference regular season champs.

Bowling Green won the series Sunday with an 8-6 victory.

The Eagles dropped to 14-34 this season and 9-18 in the MAC standings.

Waldron athletes won four of the five individual titles Saturday at the Mid-Hoosier Conference Girls Tennis Tournament.

The Mohawks swept through all three singles brackets and won the No. 2 doubles bracket as well.

At No. 1 singles, Waldron’s Emerson Lindsey defeated Southwestern’s Ella Rice in the semifinal round, 6-0, 7-5, then bested Hauser’s Bella Kilps, 7-6 (4), 6-1 in the championship.

Rice advanced to the semifinals with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Morristown’s Remi Spicklemire.

Emily Tyree won two matches at No. 2 singles to earn the MHC title. Tyree opened with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Edinburgh’s Izzy Richardson then defeated Southwestern’s Aurora Belton in the championship, 6-1, 6-4.

Richardson opened the No. 2 singles bracket with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Morristown’s Bri Flores.

Belton reached the championship match with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Hauser’s Lydia Jordan.

Riley Thurston lost just four games combined in two wins at No. 3 singles. Thurston defeated Hauser’s Kayden Miller, 6-1, 6-0 in the semifinals. She then topped Edinburgh’s Zoey Sida in the championship, 6-2, 6-1.

Miller advanced to the semifinals with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Morristown’s Maile Vitz. Sida reached the championship with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Southwestern’s Kelsey Stringer.

At No. 2 doubles, Waldron’s Jackie Corlette and Kathryn Ross defeated Edinburgh’s Bella Turner and Gracie Lawson, 6-0, 6-2 in the semifinal round.

In the championship, the Mohawks defeated Hauser’s Kaycee Ridgeway and Abby Manley, 6-2, 6-0.

Turner and Wilson reached the semifinal round with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Morristown’s Emma Wagoner and Jorja Geise.

Ridgeway and Manley advanced to the championship with a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Southwestern’s Lily DeSpain and Kate Coffman.

Hauser’s Addyson Barriger and Mattie Foster captured the No. 1 singles title with a 6-4, 3-6, 11-9 win over Waldron’s Riley Price and Audrey Berauer.

In the opening match at No. 1 doubles, Edinburgh’s Mia Dodson and Lily Turner eliminated Morristown’s Katie Theobald and Addie Osborne, 6-3, 6-0.

Price and Berauer then defeated Dodson and Turner, 6-3, 6-3.

Barriger and Foster advanced out of the semifinal round with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Southwestern’s Tanna Tatlock and Tori Burkhart.

The 49^th Annual Indiana High School Athletic Association Girls Tennis State Tournament Pairings Show airs at 7 p.m. Monday.

The show will reveal the sectional pairings for the upcoming state tournament. It will air exclusively on IHSAAtv.org.

Greg Rakestraw will serve as host.

Sectional tournaments around the state begin Tuesday and end Saturday.

Shelbyville High School is again the host site for the five-team sectional tournament that features all five Shelby County girls tennis programs.

Sectional play typically begins Wednesday with a quarterfinal round match that will set up Thursday’s semifinal matches.

The sectional championship will then follow on Friday.

The Shelbyville Sectional champion will advance to the Center Grove Regional on May 21 that also includes sectional champions from sectionals at Perry Meridian, Connersville and Center Grove.

Gavyn Fisher threw a no-hitter to get Shelbyville a sweep of New Castle then added a win Saturday over Rushville to collect a seventh-straight victory.

On Friday at New Castle, Fisher allowed just one walk and struck out 14 to complete a seven-inning no hitter to lead the Golden Bears to a 6-0 win to keep them in contention for a Hoosier Heritage Conference title.

Shelbyville improved to 8-4 in the HHC standings with two games left on the conference schedule. Mt. Vernon (10-2) leads the HHC with New Palestine second at 9-3. The Golden Bears will face Greenfield-Central (9-11, 6-6 HHC) next week.

Friday’s game was scoreless through four innings before Shelbyville scored three times in the fifth and sixth innings. Fisher helped his cause with a two-run double in the fifth.

Grantland Fitzgerald had three hits including a double and drove in a run. Brock Kuhn and Kohen Myers also drove in runs.

On Saturday, a four-run third inning put Shelbyville in control against Rushville. Five different pitchers combined to get the Golden Bears a 9-4 victory.

Myers earned the win, pitching two scoreless innings. Dalton Jones, Luke Brinkman, Gavin Reed and Fitzgerald also helped limit Rushville to four hits and four runs.

Brinkman and Jones each drove in two runs. Jones’ RBI came off a two-run home run. Kuhn had two hits.

Shelbyville is 12-7 and travels Monday to Warren Central (5-15).

Heritage Christian 15, Triton Central 4

At Triton Central Friday, J.P. Plesen and Caden Ratliff limited the Tigers to seven hits and one walk while striking out seven to end Class 2A, No. 4 Triton Central’s five-game win streak.

Hayden Beaver took the loss for Triton Central (19-3). The sophomore was one of four pitchers to take the mound.

Janssen Capps drove in two of Triton Central’s four runs. Eli Sego had a double, drove in a run and scored a run.

Tyler Allemeier had two hits and scored three runs for Heritage Christian (15-10).

North Decatur 13, Southwestern 1

At Southwestern Friday, the visiting Chargers scored four runs in the second inning and five more in the fourth to pull away and secure a sweep of the Spartans.

Ian Bunch took the loss for Southwestern (2-15, 1-11 MHC). The senior was one of four pitchers used by the Spartans. At the plate, Bunch had a double and drove in his team’s only run.

North Decatur improved to 9-10 (7-4 MHC).

Waldron 11, Morristown 5

At Morristown Friday, the Mohawks scored six runs in the first inning and never trailed in the MHC contest.

Jordan Bennett pitched five innings and struck out four to earn the win. Hunter Dodson pitched the final two innings to close out the game.

J.D. Smith and Troy Atwood each had three hits for Waldron (12-8, 6-4 MHC). Smith, Jackson Kuhn, Jared Brooks and Jordan Bennett each drove in two runs.

Morristown dropped to 5-14 (1-10 MHC).

Boys golf

Hoosier Heritage Conference Championship

Shelbyville finished tied for fourth with a 335 Saturday at Albany Golf Course.

Pendleton Heights captured the HHC title with a 306. Mt. Vernon was runner-up at 317, finishing ahead of Yorktown (322), Shelbyville, New Palestine (335), Delta (350), Greenfield-Central (351) and New Castle (353).

Mt. Vernon’s Elijah Lemmon was the medalist with a 73.

Jake Garrison earned All-HHC honors with a 77.

Also scoring for Shelbyville were Logan Tobian (84), Logan Reinhart (85), Brock Wischmeyer (88) and Ethan Hughes (101).

Softball

Columbus North 15, Shelbyville 7

At Columbus North, Payton Morris hit two home runs and drove in eight to lead the Bull Dogs to the win.

Miley McClellan had five hits and scored two runs as part of a 17-hit performance for Columbus North in a preview of a Sectional 14 quarterfinal game scheduled for May 20.

Cheyenne Eads and Addie Stieneker blasted home runs for Shelbyville (13-8). Eads (three hits), Stieneker and Anna Shearer had seven of the Golden Bears’ nine hits off Morris and reliever Kelsey Lovelace.

Sophomore Sydney Brown took the loss for the Golden Bears in her first varsity start in the pitcher’s circle.

Columbus North improved to 10-9.

Triton Central 9, Southport 9

At Triton Central Friday, Brylie Couch scattered five hits and struck out 15 to lead the Tigers (13-6) to their ninth-straight win.

Madison Collins had a triple and drove in three runs. Couch and Jalynn Keith each had two hits.

The loss dropped Southport to 4-15.

Morristown 14, Waldron 3

At Morristown Friday, Avery Everhart had two hits and drove in three runs for the Yellow Jackets (7-8, 4-4 MHC). Charlie Marcum also had two hits and drove in two runs.

Abby Hawk earned the win, allowing four hits and four walks while striking out five.

Alyssa Benson had two hits and scored a run for Waldron (5-8, 2-6 MHC).

Girls tennis

Triton Central 3, Indianapolis Lutheran 2

At Lutheran Friday, three of the five matches went three sets before the Tigers prevailed over the Saints.

At No. 2 singles, Triton Central’s Ellie Gast defeated Rachel Murphy, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.

Anniston Evans secured a win at No. 3 singles over Bri Randall, 6-2, 6-0.

Triton Central’s third win came at No. 2 doubles when Neve Kahler and Estelle Gearlds bested Kendall Bowling and Dani Taylor, 6-3, 6-2.

At No. 1 singles, Lutheran’s Cat Erwin defeated Maryrose Felling, 4-6, 7-6 (5), 10-8.

Rachel Bolton and Malin Bullock topped Triton Central’s Audrey Canter and Lauren Grant at No. 1 doubles, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2.

At Lutheran, Triton Central got first-place finishes from Brayden Wilkins (11.1 in 100, 5-10 in high jump, 18-5 in long jump), Cash Compton (23.16 in 200), Isaac Ross (57.62 in 400), Brody Ciriello (2:14.93 in 800), Liam Thompson (5:25.37 in 1,600) and Zeke Robertson (40.52 in 300 hurdles).

Robertson, Compton, Wilkins and Braden Brown won the 400 relay in 44.81.

Oldenburg Academy 67, Southwestern 58, Trinity Lutheran 22

At Southwestern Friday, the host Spartans won the 1,600 relay in 3:57.53 and the 3,200 relay in 9:55.24.

Southwestern got third-place finishes from Michel Weisser (13.13 in 100), Ethan Sipes (26.79 in 200), Bruce O’Brien (1:01.26 in 400) and Mitchell Clements (37-5 in shot put and 97-11 in discus).

Indianapolis Lutheran 78, Triton Central 73, Speedway 9, Providence Cristo Rey 6

At Lutheran, Collecting first-place points for Triton Central were Vivian Blye (13.25 in 100, 28.22 in 200), Elaina Maurice (1:06.06 in 400), Allie Griffith (19.25 in 100 hurdles) and Lydia Hough (14-7 in long jump).

Griffith, Hough and Blye teamed with Farah Coen to win the 400 relay in 55.02.

Boys volleyball

Madison Sectional

Madison def. Shelbyville, 25-21, 22-25, 25-15, 25-17

At Madison, the Cubs secured a third win over the Golden Bears this season to advance to the sectional championship game.

The Golden Bears’ season ended with an 8-15 record under first-year head coach April Parker.

In the sectional championship match, Center Grove defeated Madison, 25-12, 25-15, 36-24.

Madison finished 11-14.

Shelbyville senior Ethan Lambert won the Hoosier Heritage Conference championship in the discus Thursday at Mt. Vernon High School.

Lambert’s best throw of 160 feet, five inches bested the field in the discus event.

Logan Page had a pair of top-eight finishes for Shelbyville. He placed eighth in the 200 (23.92 seconds) and seventh in the high jump (5-8).

Ben Price finished eighth in the 400 (53.84) and seventh in the long jump (19-1.5).

Jaylen Eads cleared 9-6 to finish tied for eighth in the pole vault.

Shelbyville’s best relay finish came in the 1,600 relay. Page and Price ran with John Turner and Christian Powell and finished fifth in 3:39.27.

At Waldron, the Mohawks used a six-run second inning to jumpstart their Mid-Hoosier Conference victory over the Yellow Jackets (5-13, 1-9 MHC).

Jacob Bennett benefited from the run support and produced a strong effort on the mound, allowing just one hit and two walks while striking out eight.

Jackson Kuhn and Troy Atwood each had two hits for Waldron (11-8, 5-4 MHC). Atwood and Jared Brooks each drove in two runs.

North Decatur 3, Southwestern 0

At North Decatur, the visiting Spartans got seven runners on base but could not plate a run in the MHC loss to the Chargers (8-10, 6-4 MHC).

Landon Drake had two hits for Southwestern (2-14, 1-10 MHC).

James Oliver allowed four hits and three walks while striking out six over six innings.

At Waldron, Nevaeh Cox and Kayla Bair each drove in three runs and Abby Hawk allowed just two hits and three walks while going the distance in the circle for Morristown (6-8, 3-4 MHC).

The Yellow Jackets scored five runs in the first and added six more in the second to put away the Mohawks (5-7, 2-5 MHC).

Alyssa Benson took the loss for Waldron, pitching three innings and allowing seven hits and 13 runs (only six were earned).

Waldron’s Will Larrison won three individual events and helped the Mohawks close the night with a win in the 1,600 relay.

Larrison took first place in the 400 (51.87), 800 (2:12.20) and the 1,600 (4:41.39). He joined with Lucas Shaw, Jared Crosby and Max Jones to win the 1,600 relay in 3:39.88.

Shaw tied for first place with South Decatur’s McKinley Shonk in the high jump at 5-10.

Braylon Williams also provided Waldron with a MHC championship performance in the shot put (42-8). Williams also finished second in the discus (116-3).

Crosby also finished runner-up in the 200 (24.13).

The Morristown quartet of Gavin Wilson, Parker Theobald, Hunter Biddle and Arik Trattner won the 400 relay in 48.43.

Morristown’s Levi Stoddard finished second in the 300 hurdles (47.08).

Morristown’s 3,200 relay team also took second place in 9:29.15.

Morristown’s Ryan Crisman finished third in the 800 (2:18.74).

MHC Meet

North Decatur 144, South Decatur 135, Morristown 116, Hauser 76, Edinburgh 36, Waldron 35, Southwestern 16

Waldron’s Riley Price was crowned MHC champion in the 800 (2:48.72) and 1,600 (6:18.05).

Morristown’s Audrey VanDyke won the 3,200 in 14:01.52.

Morristown had runner-up performances from Grace McLaughlin in the 1,600 (6:18.06), 800 (2:50.63) and 3,200 (14:27.14) and Brooklyn Carlton in the 300 hurdles (52.63). The Yellow Jackets also finished second in the 3,200 relay (12:02.88).

Carlton placed third in the 100 hurdles (18.29) and the high jump (4-6) while teammate Nevaeh Sanders finished third in the 300 hurdles (54.03).

Morristown’s Kindall Dorsey finished third in the discus (76-3).

Waldron’s Brooklyn Milbourn placed third in the shot put (26-1.5).

Marianne O’Neill, longtime table games dealer at Horseshoe Indianapolis, brought home the top prize at the recent Sunday, April 28 AQHA East Level 1 Championship in the Halter Class.

O’Neill, a native of Shelbyville, earned the blue ribbon championship at the World Equestrian Center in Wilmington, Ohio. She shows and rides in honor of her daughter, Erin, who passed away in a fatal accident in 2016 at the age of 24.

Erin, a graduate of Southwestern High School and Harrison College, worked as a massage therapist at the time of her passing. She was also a beverage server and bartender at Horseshoe Indianapolis. She was very involved in Shelby County 4-H has a teenager and won Indiana State Fair Champion Horse and Pony in 2006.

In honor of Erin, Horseshoe Indianapolis became a sponsor of the Amateur Performance Halter Mares Level 1 Champions last year, the class Marianne competes in. This year, she brought home first place with her horse, Suddenly Im a Diva, who she calls “Scarlet.”

“Erin and I showed for many years together,” noted Marianne. “It helps give me a purpose and a bit of joy to ride and show horses again after taking a break from it. Honoring my daughter’s life is all I can do now, and I ride in her honor.”

Marianne has worked on and off at Horseshoe Indianapolis since its inception as Indiana Downs in 2003. She also works as a flight attendant. She has won several awards in horsemanship over the years including AQHA Intermediate of the Year for Indiana in 2019.

Class 2A, No. 4 Triton Central tallied 29 runs to back a pair of strong pitching performances Wednesday to move one step closer to capturing the Indiana Crossroads Conference baseball championship.

In the first game of a doubleheader in Fairland, the Tigers broke open a tie game with a seven-run fifth inning and a nine-run sixth to take a 17-2 win over Monrovia.

Hayden May allowed three hits and five walks but struck out 13 in a complete-game performance.

Weston Smith and Brayden Hoover each had three hits while Kellan Dishman went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI. May scored three times and drove in two.

In game two, Bryce Haney pitched a complete game, allowing three hits and four walks while notching seven strikeouts in a 12-2 victory.

Hoover had three more hits, two runs scored and two RBI. Haney drove in three runs to help his own cause on the mound.

Triton Central improved to 19-2 overall and 11-1 in the ICC standings. The Tigers close out their conference schedule on Tuesday and Wednesday against Indianapolis Lutheran (11-10, 9-3 ICC).

Monrovia dropped to 9-11 (5-7 ICC) this season.

Shelbyville 6, New Castle 2

At Barnett Field in Shelbyville, sophomore Aiden Smith struck out a career-high 16 in a complete-game performance against the Trojans. He allowed three hits and three walks and just two runs – only one was earned.

Luke Brinkman, Brock Kuhn and Grantland Fitzgerald each had two hits for the Golden Bears (10-7, 7-4 HHC). Dalton Jones had a three-run home run in the sixth inning to seal the win.

Carson Bane pitched three innings and allowed four hits and three runs to take the loss for New Castle (3-15, 1-10 HHC).

Softball

Triton Central 7, Speedway 0

At Triton Central, Lilli Fillippinie tossed a four-hit shutout and struck out 12 to lead the Tigers to a win in their final conference game of the season.

The Tigers (12-6, 4-3 ICC) scored three runs in the third inning and three more in the sixth to seal the win. Fillippinie, Makinah Noel and Brylie Couch each had two hits. Fillippinie and Jadyn Capps each drove in two runs.

Hayli Clampitt went the distance and took the loss for Speedway (7-12, 1-5 ICC).

Shelbyville 8, Delta 6

At Delta, Shelbyville scored six runs over the first three innings but had to fight off the Eagles’ late comeback attempt to get the HHC win.

Anna Shearer had three hits to lead the Golden Bears (13-7, 4-2 HHC). Kali Laycock had two hits and drove in three. Kiah Pandoli and Addie Stieneker each had two hits.

Cheyenne Eads pitched the first two innings to get the win. The senior had to return in the sixth inning to close it out when Delta cut the lead to 8-6 off Gracie Crafton, who allowed two hits, walked four and struck out four in 3.2 innings.

Girls tennis

Yorktown 3, Shelbyville 2

At Yorktown, the visiting Golden Bears got match wins at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles but could not produce another win to secure the HHC victory.

At No. 1 singles, Ava Muckerheide defeated Yorktown’s Emma Hansard, 6-1, 6-1. And Sydney Baker and Sophia Asher topped Pip Stinson and Taylor Meyer at No. 1 doubles, 6-3, 7-5.

Shelbyville’s Ella Connolly and Megan Childres were defeated in singles matches in straight sets. Faye Lynn-Voss and Renee Aldridge lost at No. 2 doubles in three sets.

The Golden Bears are 6-11 this season and 2-3 in the HHC standings.

Girls track

Hoosier Heritage Conference Meet

At Mt. Vernon, the host Marauders captured the team title with 125 points. New Palestine edged Greenfield-Central, 110.5-107, for second place. Shelbyville finished eighth with 25.5 points.

Sonora O’Connor led the Golden Bears with a third-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles (48.57) and a fourth-place finish in the 100 hurdles (17.44).

O’Connor also helped a pair of relay teams to fourth-place finishes.

Shelbyville placed fourth in the 400 relay (53.05) with Diana Gasca, O’Connor, Cyanne St. Bernard and Ava Wilson.

O’Connor, St. Bernard and Wilson were joined by Alyna Castanon to finish fourth in the 1,600 relay (4:25.66).

Brylie Couch had three hits and drove in six runs Tuesday to lead Triton Central to its seventh-straight win.

The Tigers scored 10 runs in the first inning and cruised to a 16-2 Indiana Crossroads Conference win over Indianapolis Ritter (3-12, 0-6 ICC).

Freshman June Murdick went the distance for Triton Central (11-6, 3-3 ICC), allowing six hits and striking out five in five innings.

Madison Collins had two hits, scored two runs and drove in three. Jadyn Capps also had two hits.

Triton Central closes out its ICC schedule today against Speedway (7-11, 1-4).

Triton Central 5, Indianapolis Scecina 0

The Tigers improved to 12-6 this season with a sweep of the Crusaders.

At No. 1 singles, Maryrose Felling defeated Ella Gadreau, 6-0, 6-0.

Ellie Gast bested Giuliana Moscoso at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-0.

And Anniston Evans completed the singles sweep with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Lillian Linn at No. 3 singles.

At No. 1 doubles, Lauren Grant and Audrey Canter defeated Lola Carey and Soledad Gonzalez, 6-0, 6-1.

Neve Kahler and Estelle Gearlds were victorious at No. 2 doubles over Amelia Koening and Ashley Mendez, 6-0, 6-2.

Boys volleyball

Martinsville def. Shelbyville, 25-19, 22-25, 25-22, 29-27

At Martinsville, the visiting Golden Bears closed out their regular-season schedule with a four-game loss to the Artesians (12-11).

Jayion Grice led Shelbyville (8-14) with 18 kills, three service aces and 27 digs.

Corbin Deck finished with 12 kills and 25 digs. Layne Pogue had a team-high 28 digs. Diego Hernandez notched 41 assists.

Shelbyville’s postseason begins Friday at Madison (9-13) in the four-team Madison Sectional. The other semifinal pits Center Grove (18-6) against Scottsburg (1-11).

The future of the Indiana Crossroads Conference is in doubt after Beech Grove, Monrovia, Speedway and Triton Central struck an agreement to leave the 20-year old Indianapolis-based conference.

Those four public schools will join with fellow public schools Indian Creek and Tri-West in 2026 to form an as-yet-to-be-named conference. The new conference will be amenable to adding two more schools, according to Triton Central athletic director Bryan Graham.

“We weren’t looking to move,” confirmed Graham Tuesday afternoon. “This was brought to us.”

Conference realignment has been active in recent years but the Indiana Crossroads Conference (ICC) has been stable with both public and private schools in its mix. Cascade already had announced its departure following this school year to join a newly-created Monon Athletic Conference with Crawfordsville, Frankfort, North Montgomery, Southmont, Western Boone, Greencastle and North Putnam.

Covenant Christian was announced as Cascade’s replacement to keep the ICC at eight teams with Indianapolis Lutheran, Indianapolis Scecina and Indianapolis Cardinal Ritter. Now, half of the conference will depart following two more seasons of competition.

Graham forwarded a joint letter drafted by the four schools to the Shelby County Post that stated, “This should serve as a letter of separation from the Indiana Crossroads Conference beginning in August of 2026. We plan to honor our current contracts and by laws through the 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 schools years,”

Triton Central joined the ICC in 2012. Based on enrollment of the six schools in the new conference, Triton Central would have the smallest enrollment.

“We might be the smallest at 468 (students) and Beech Grove the largest (892), but I think we have more student-athletes,” said Graham of the disparity that could grow larger if more Class 4A schools are added to the conference before the 2026-2027 school year.

Beech Grove is the only 4A school. Indian Creek (636), Tri-West (606) and Speedway (571) are 3A schools. Monrovia (503) is the only other 2A school with Triton Central.

Tri-West is currently a member of the Sagamore Conference. Indian Creek is a member of the Western Indiana Conference.

One key piece to the new conference grouping is dedicated facilities and improved athletic experience for student athletes, according to Graham.

“The private schools don’t always have their own facilities,” said Graham.

Another positive to the move, according to Graham, is the fact that the public schools also have middle school or junior high programs.

“Right now, our middle school conference only has three teams,” he said. “This would give our middle school a full conference.”

Shelbyville High School senior Luke Brinkman is the 2024 Shelbyville Rotary Club/Paul Cross Award winner for the boys basketball program.

The Shelbyville boys basketball team held its postseason awards event Monday.

Brinkman is a three-year varsity letter winner with the Golden Bears. He finished the season as the team’s third leading rebounder and ranked second in three-point field goal percentage. Brinkman scored a season-high 11 points this past season at Yorktown.

“Luke demonstrated an unselfish dedication to the team over the course of his time as a Golden Bear,” said Shelbyville head coach John Hartnett Jr. “He is a very deserving recipient.”

Caden Claxton (photo) was recognized for his selection as a member of the 12-player Hoosier Heritage Conference All-Conference Team. The sophomore was the Golden Bears’ scoring and assists leader and the second leading rebounder.

“Caden had an excellent season and continues to improve,” said Hartnett. “It is a significant achievement to make the all-conference team as a sophomore.”

Other awards included senior Kohen Myers earning the Most Improved Player award, senior Ethan Lambert receiving the “Guts” award, sophomore Mar Nicholson voted as “Best Defensive Player” and seniors Kyle Clouse and Brock Kuhn were selected as co-recipients of the “Golden Bear Award.”

Statistical leaders honored were:

• Damon Badgley – top 3-point shooting percentage
• Mar Nicholson – top rebounder and shot blocker
• Kohen Myers – most charges taken
• Caden Claxton – top scorer, top assists and top steals

The junior varsity basketball team also presented awards Monday.

Sophomore Gavin Reed, freshman Grantland Fitzgerald and junior Kenny Owens received JV special achievement awards.

Sophomore Myles Clark was honored for being named to the HHC All-Academic Team.

The freshman team also was honored following a 7-12 season.

The junior varsity finished 15-7.

The varsity team went 11-12.

“I was very pleased with the progress and the attitude of this year’s team,” said Hartnett. “We asked a lot of them and their effort was excellent. I want to particularly commend this year’s five seniors. They served as true leaders and were extremely important to our progress. They will be missed.

Waldron swept Morristown then defeated Triton Central in the championship match to be crowned Shelby County Tournament champions Saturday in Waldron.

The Mohawks lost just nine games total in topping Morristown, 5-0, in the semifinal round to advance to face Triton Central, who eliminated Southwestern in the other semifinal match.

In the championship, Waldron utilized wins at No. 2 singles, No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles to secure a 3-2 victory over Triton Central – its second win over the Tigers this season. The two programs could meet again later this month at the Shelbyville Sectional.

At No. 2 singles, Emily Tyree bested Ellie Gast, 6-4, 6-2. Riley Thurston secured a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles over Anniston Evans.

And at No. 1 doubles, Audrey Berauer and Riley Price defeated Audrey Canter and Lauren Grant, 6-1, 6-3.

Triton Central’s Maryrose Felling topped Emerson Lindsey at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 7-5.

Shelbyville graduate Charlie Rife homered in back-to-back Atlantic Sun Conference games at Eastern Kentucky.

On Friday, Rife blasted a grand slam, his fourth home run of the season for Bellarmine, in an 8-7 loss at Eastern Kentucky.

Rife followed that performance Saturday with a two-hit, five RBI day. He hit a three-run home run in the second inning but the Knights still lost 17-7.

Rife also had a two-hit game on April 30 for Bellarmine in a 9-5 loss to Morehead State.

Madisen Hinderliter

The Shelbyville graduate finished 15^th in the discus (34.74 meters) and eighth in the hammer throw (43.44 meters) for St. Francis at the 2024 Crossroads League Track and Field Outdoor Championships at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion.

Zaleeya Martin

The Shelbyville graduate placed 16^th in the 100 meters (12.54 seconds) and 15^th in the 200 (26.10) for the University of Indianapolis at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Truman University in Kirksville, Missouri.

Martin also helped UIndy’s 400 relay team to a third-place finish in 47.51.

Elizabeth Kemper

The Triton Central graduate helped Taylor University to a third-place finish in the Crossroads League Championship at Otter Creek Golf Course in Columbus, Indiana.

Kemper tied for 19^th in the individual standings with rounds of 84, 84 and 80 for a three-round total of 248.

Allison Batten

The Morristown graduate finished 17^th in the 400 (1:05.98) for Trine University in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Calvin University in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Katie Mathies

The Shelbyville graduate had a double and drove in a run Saturday in DePauw softball’s 4-3 loss at Denison in Granville, Ohio.

DePauw dropped to 24-13-1 overall and 12-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference standings.

Cory Taylor

The Shelbyville graduate went 1-for-4 Friday with a stolen base and a RBI in Eastern Michigan’s 10-9 loss in 10 innings at Toledo.

Taylor also had a RBI Saturday in a 4-3 loss and Sunday in an 11-1 loss at Toledo to push his team-leading RBI total to 35 this season.

Eastern Michigan dropped to 13-32 overall and 8-16 in the Mid-America Conference standings.

Karissa Hamilton

The Shelbyville graduate had two hits and two walks Sunday for Kentucky softball in an 8-7 loss in eight innings to No. 3 Tennessee.

Kentucky is 30-21 this season.

Abby Eberhardt

The Triton Central graduate had a single and drove in a run Thursday in Manchester softball’s 10-3 loss at Defiance.

Manchester is 19-17 this season.

Kina Schultz

The Shelbyville graduate placed 10^th in the 110 hurdles (16.28) and 17^th in the 400 hurdles (1:14.94) for Muskingum University at the Ohio Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Heidelberg University.

Kylee Edwards

The Shelbyville graduate had a single Sunday in Mississippi State’s 2-1 win over No. 14 Georgia that helped the Bulldogs win the three-game series and improve to 33-17 (12-12 Southeastern Conference).

With the win, Mississippi State finished with at least a .500 record in the SEC for the first time since 2007.

Cambridge City Lincoln pounded out 13 hits overall and scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning to secure a road win Monday at Waldron.

The Golden Eagles improved to 5-11 this season.

Jordan Bennett took the loss for Waldron (10-8). The junior pitched five innings, allowed four hits and four runs while striking out five. Hunter Dodson pitched the final two innings in the loss.

Waldron managed just three hits.

The Mohawks host Morristown (5-12), a 13-0 winner at Anderson Prep Monday, on Thursday for the first of two Mid-Hoosier Conference contests.

Indianapolis Lutheran 10, Southwestern 0

At Lutheran, Nate Hughes tossed a five-inning, one-hitter and had nine strikeouts to lead the Saints over the Spartans.

Lutheran (9-10) scored runs in all five innings and took advantage of four Southwestern errors. Gage Meaney had two hits and scored two runs. Jackson Brandenburg also had two hits.

Kyle Beck took the loss for Southwestern (2-13). The sophomore pitched three innings and allowed seven hits and nine runs. Caleb McCracken allowed two hits and one unearned run in one inning of relief work.

Southwestern hosts Crothersville (1-11) today.

Softball

Triton Central 19, Waldron 0

At Waldron, Madi Peterson allowed one hit and struck out nine to lead Triton Central to its sixth-straight win.

Hailey Harris had three hits, scored two runs and drove in three for Triton Central (10-6).

The Mohawks dropped below .500 at 5-6 and host Herron (8-8) today.

Triton Central hosts Indianapolis Ritter (3-11) today.

Triton Central captured Shelby County Baseball and Softball Tournament titles Saturday at Waldron.

Baseball

Class 2A, No. 4 Triton Central defeated Morristown, 14-1, in the semifinal round and Southwestern, 14-3, in the championship game.

The Tigers scored 13 runs in the first two innings against the Yellow Jackets (4-12) and Hayden Beaver allowed just five hits and one walk while striking out nine in five innings of work.

Brayden Hoover had three hits, scored two runs and had three RBI. Hayden May finished with two doubles, scored two runs and drove in four.

In the other semifinal, Southwestern defeated Waldron, 12-1.

James Oliver allowed just three hits and struck out 14 to lead the Spartans to the win.

Ian Bunch had three walks and a home run. The senior scored four runs and drove in three. Kyle Beck, Caleb McCracken and Oliver each drove in two runs.

Jared Brooks took the loss for Waldron (10-7).

In the championship, Triton Central (17-2) scored eight runs in the first inning and cruised to another five-inning victory.

Blaine Raider pitched the first three innings to earn the win. He allowed four Southwestern hits, two walks and all three runs. Logan Plew and Ben Toth each pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

Mathew Shircliff, Bryce Haney and Hoover each had two hits. Kail Slaughter, Kellan Dishman, Shircliff, Hoover and Haney each drove in two runs.

Southwestern dropped to 2-12.

Softball

Triton Central scored 40 runs on the way to the Shelby County Tournament title.

In the semifinal, the Tigers defeated Waldron, 23-0.

Triton Central scored 13 runs in the first and 10 runs in the third to support starting pitcher Madi Peterson. The sophomore allowed just three hits and a walk in five innings in the circle.

Madison Collins had four hits and drove in five runs. Jalynn Keith had two hits and four RBI.

Waldron dropped to 5-5 this season.

With the win, Triton Central advanced to the championship game against Morristown due to Southwestern not fielding a program.

Head coach Aaron Pyle went with freshman June Murdick in the pitcher’s circle and she helped deliver a 17-4 victory over the Yellow Jackets (5-8). Murdick allowed five hits and four runs while striking out nine.

Lilli Fillippinie had two hits and four RBI for Triton Central (9-6). Murdick also had three hits and two RBI.

To capture a third-straight sectional championship, Shelbyville softball must find ways to score runs against quality pitchers. That was evident Friday and Saturday as Pendleton Heights’ Shelby Messer and Mooresville’s Zoey Kugelman limited the Golden Bears to 11 hits and one run over 14 innings which resulted in a pair of losses.

On Friday, two Pendleton Heights’ errors allowed Shelbyville an early 1-0 lead but the Golden Bears failed to score again and lost 2-1.

A leadoff triple by Skylar Baldwin led to Class 4A, No. 13 Pendleton Heights’ first run off Cheyenne Eads.

In the fifth, Cassie Hayes’ leadoff grounder spun by Shelbyville first baseman Sydney Brown. Ari Rector followed with a sacrifice bunt to move Hayes to third and she later scored on a wild pitch for what proved to be the game-winning run.

Eads drew a one-out walk in the seventh and Anna Shearer kept the inning alive with a two-out single before Messer induced Gracie Crafton to fly out and end the game.

The loss dropped Shelbyville into a third-place tie in the Hoosier Heritage Conference behind 4A No. 3 New Palestine (14-1, 5-0 HHC) and the Arabians (14-7, 3-0 HHC). Shelbyville and Yorktown are both 3-2 in the conference standings.

On Saturday, Shelbyville traveled to Mooresville to the site of its final game of the 2023 season – a 4-1 regional championship game loss.

Kugelman scattered five Shelbyville hits and benefitted from a pair of inning-ending double plays to defeat the Golden Bears 3-0.

All three Mooresville runs came in the fifth inning when the Shelbyville defense failed to catch two fly balls. Mooresville improved to 17-3.

Eads allowed nine hits and struck out eight Pioneers in the loss. She dropped to 12-6 this season with an earned run average of 1.53 over 100.2 innings of work. She has 165 strikeouts.

The toughest part of Shelbyville’s schedule continues Tuesday at home against 4A No. 6 Roncalli (16-2). The Golden Bears are 12-7.

Batesville Invitational

At Hillcrest Country Club Saturday, all five Corydon Central golfers shot below 80 to capture the team title at 307. Madison was runner-up at 310.

Shelbyville placed seventh at 331. Jake Garrison led the Golden Bears with a 77. Also competing were Logan Tobian (84), Logan Reinhart (84), Brock Wischmeyer (86) and Ethan Hughes (91).

Madison’s Henry Ashley was the medalist at 71.

Girls tennis

New Palestine 5, Shelbyville 0

At Shelbyville Friday, the visiting Dragons improved to 7-2 (4-1 HHC) with a sweep of the Golden Bears (5-10, 2-3 HHC).

New Palestine won all three singles matches and the No. 2 doubles match in straight sets.

At No. 1 doubles, Josephine Harvey and Emily Appleby defeated Sydney Baker and Sophie Asher, 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-4.

Purdue Polytechnic Invitational

Shelbyville finished 2-1 Saturday with its only loss to Irvington Prep (8-13).

In a 25-18, 25-15 win over Crawfordsville, Layne Pogue had a team-high six kills. Corbin Deck and Nathan Singzon each finished with 11 digs. Jayion Grice collected 15 assists.

The Golden Bears are 8-13 this season and close out their regular-season schedule Tuesday at Martinsville (9-11).

Track and field

Indiana Crossroads Conference Meet

At Beech Grove Friday, Triton Central senior Brayden Wilkins won the 200-meter dash and was runner-up in the 100 and long jump.

Wilkins crossed the finish line in the 200 in 22.40 to score one of Triton Central’s two event wins. He finished second in the 100 (11.01) and long jump (21 feet, three inches).

Wilkins also teamed with Zeke Robertson, Cash Compton and Braden Brown to finish third in the 400 relay in 44.72.

Robertson won the 300 hurdles in 40.91.

Also scoring top-three finishes for Triton Central were Landon Slone (53.48 in 400) and Ethan Cales (16.63 in 110 hurdles).

Cascade won the team title with 95 points. Triton Central finished fourth at 72.5.

Vivian Blye was Triton Central’s only top-three finisher in the girls meet. Blye placed third in the 100 (13.25) and 200 (28.21).

Monrovia won the team title with 206 points. Triton Central finished seventh at 19.33.

Cougar Chase Invitational

At Greenfield-Central Friday, Shelbyville had three individuals capture top-three finishes.

Sonora O’Connor placed third in the 100 hurdles (17.63) and 300 hurdles (49.2).

O’Connor joined with Cyanne St. Bernard, Ava Wilson and Alyna Castanon to finish second in the 1,600 relay (4:18.54).

Christian Powell was runner-up in the 200 (23.07). Ethan Lambert also produced a runner-up finish in the discus (158-0).

Shelbyville boys volleyball secured a win at Garrett Gymnasium Thursday in its final home contest before becoming an IHSAA sanctioned sport.

Senior Jayion Grice  led the Golden Bears to a 25-17, 25-15, 25-15 victory over Christel House. Grice finished with a team-high 12 kills, three service aces and 19 digs.

Corbin Deck had 10 kills and 22 digs. Kyle Clouse finished with 10 kills and Diego Hernandez had five aces, 13 digs and 34 assists.

Christel House dropped to 8-7.

Shelbyville learned its sectional draw this past week. The Golden Bears are assigned to the four-team sectional at Madison and will face the host Cubs (9-12) on May 11 in one semifinal contest. Madison defeated Shelbyville in five sets on March 30.

The other semifinal on May 11 pits Center Grove (18-6) against Scottsburg (1-11). The sectional championship match is scheduled for 1 p.m. on May 12.

Waldron 8, North Decatur 4

At North Decatur, Jacob Bennett went the distance, allowing five hits and one walk and struck out 12 to get the Mohawks a Mid-Hoosier Conference sweep of the Class A, No. 10 Chargers (7-7, 5-2 MHC).

Troy Atwood had two hits, scored two runs and drove in two runs to help Waldron improve to 10-6 (4-4 MHC). The Mohawks reached 10 wins as a program for the first time in more than a decade, according to head coach Tommy Coy.

Jacob Lindsey, Jordan Bennett and Keith Settles each had two hits for Waldron.

South Decatur 13, Morristown 4

At South Decatur, Corey Nugent and J.P. Scudder combined to limit the Yellow Jackets to seven hits and collected 11 strikeouts to complete the MHC sweep and improve to 9-3 (6-0 MHC).

Nugent also drove in four runs. Corbin Johnson had two hits, two runs scored and drove in two runs.

Morristown dropped to 4-11 overall and 1-8 in the MHC standings.

Boys golf

Indianapolis Lutheran 161, Triton Central 197

At Hawk’s Tail, Chase Chandler led the Tigers in the loss with a 44.

Colton Ayers followed at 49. Taggy Goul shot 51 and Derreck Uhls finished at 53. Cael Butler completed the scorecard with a 62.

Caden Perkins was the medalist with a 37.

Girls tennis

Triton Central 5, Indianapolis Ritter 0

At Triton Central, the Tigers dominated the match against an Indiana Crossroads Conference opponent, losing just four games.

Maryrose Felling, Ellie Gast and Anniston Evans earned singles wins.

The doubles teams of Lauren Grant and Audrey Canter (No. 1 doubles) and Neve Kahler and Estelle Gearlds (No. 2 doubles) did not lose a game in sweeping the doubles matches.

New Castle 4, Shelbyville 1

At Shelbyville, the No. 1 doubles team of Sydney Baker and Sophie Asher secured the Golden Bears’ lone match win. Baker and Asher defeated Jaylee Bush and Payton Dolce, 6-4, 6-1.

New Castle won the other four matches in straight sets.

The Golden Bears dropped to 5-9 overall and 2-2 against Hoosier Heritage Conference opponents.

Softball

Triton Central 4, Rushville 0

At Rushville, Brylie Couch twirled a seven-inning no-hitter to get the Tigers back above .500 at 7-6. Couch walked two and struck out 10.

Lilli Fillippinie, Jadyn Capps and Jayda McKee each drove in a run.

Becca Tabeling took the loss for Rushville (2-8).

North Decatur 20, Waldron 3

At North Decatur, the host Chargers scored seven runs in the first inning and eight more in the second to secure the MHC victory.

North Decatur improved to 7-6 (6-2 MHC).

Destiny Hirschauer and Brooklyn Hudnall each had two hits for Waldron (5-4, 2-4 MHC).

Morristown 18, South Decatur 5

At South Decatur, the Yellow Jackets used a 9-run first inning to pull away for the MHC win.

Avery Everhart led Morristown (5-7, 2-4 MHC) with four hits, three runs and three RBI. Nevaeh Cox had two hits, three runs and four RBI.

A three-run third inning proved enough run support for Bryce Haney, who allowed three hits and three walks while striking out seven in a complete-game performance Wednesday to lead Class 2A, No. 4 Triton Central to a 3-2 victory over 2A No. 9 Cascade in Fairland.

The win elevated the Tigers (15-2, 9-1 Indiana Crossroads Conference) back to the top of the conference standings.

Noah Dasgupta took the loss for Cascade (12-3, 8-2 ICC) after allowing all three runs, only one was earned, and striking out seven.

Eli Sego had a run-scoring double in the third inning and scored as well. Janssen Capps and Brayden Hoover also singled and scored in the inning.

Shelbyville 11, Yorktown 6

At Yorktown, the visiting Golden Bears put six runs on the scoreboard in the first three innings and Gavyn Fisher and Luke Brinkman kept the Tigers in check for a sweep of the Hoosier Heritage Conference two-game series.

Fisher pitched the first five innings and scattered seven hits that netted two runs. Brinkman pitched the final two innings to close out the win.

Fisher had a double and drove in three runs. Kohen Myers, Aiden Smith an Dalton Jones each had two hits.

Landen Eppard took the loss for Yorktown (9-8, 4-8 HHC), allowing seven runs in 4.2 innings of work.

Shelbyville improved to 9-7 (6-4 HHC).

Edinburgh 7, Southwestern 6

At Edinburgh, Avynn Whitaker had three hits, scored two runs and drove in a run to help the Lancers get a two-game sweep of the Spartans (1-11, 1-9 Mid-Hoosier Conference).

Jared Myers earned the win after taking over for Whitaker on the mound in the first inning as the Spartans raced out to a 2-0 lead. He allowed seven hits and three walks while striking out five in 6.2 innings of work.

Edinburgh improved to 10-5-1 (4-3 MHC).

Boys golf

Speedway 162, Triton Central 175, Beech Grove 254

At Brickyard Crossing, Triton Central split a meet featuring a trio of ICC squads.

Derreck Uhls led the Tigers with a season-low round of 40 that left him runner-up in the individual standings. Chase Chandler finished fifth at 42.

Completing the Triton Central scorecard were Colton Ayers (46), Max Ray (47) and Taggy Goul (57).

Softball

North Decatur 16, Waldron 0

At Waldron, a six-run first inning jumpstarted the Chargers in the MHC contest. 

Maddie Hungerford started in the pitcher’s circle for Waldron (5-3, 2-3 MHC) and took the loss.

North Decatur stayed atop the MHC standings, improving to 6-4 overall and 5-0 against conference foes.

Triton Central 5, Knightstown 0

At Knightstown, Triton Central scored three runs in the first inning and added two more in the seventh to defeat the Panthers (3-10).

Brylie Couch had a two-run home run and Gracie Craig, Madi Peterson and Hailey Harris had doubles to help Triton Central improve to 6-6.

Lilli Fillippinie tossed a four-hit shutout with 15 strikeouts.

Triton Central lost just one game in sweeping the doubles matches. 

At No. 1 singles, Maryrose Felling defeated Jessica Walsh, 6-4, 6-3.

Anniston Evans was victorious at No. 3 singles over Zoey Sida, 6-2, 6-2.

Shelbyville sophomore Aiden Smith limited Yorktown to three hits and struck out 13 Tuesday at Barnett Field to lead the Golden Bears to a 4-1 Hoosier Heritage Conference victory.

The Golden Bears (8-7, 5-4 HHC) scored a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth innings to win the first of a two-game series with the Tigers (9-7, 4-7).

In the fourth, Brock Kuhn and Kohen Myers led off the inning with singles and came around to score.

Grantland Fitzgerald and Dalton Jones singled in the fifth inning and scored on errors.

Cascade 5, Triton Central 1

At Cascade, the Class 2A, No. 9 Cadets pinned the first Indiana Crossroads Conference loss on the Tigers and created a tie atop the standings.

Evan Lanphier limited 2A No. 4 Triton Central to three hits and struck out seven in 6.2 innings. Logan Howard secured the final out to improve Cascade to 12-2 (8-1 ICC).

Hayden May took the loss for Triton Central (14-2, 8-1 ICC), allowing nine hits and two walks while striking out nine.

Carson Bassett, Jonas Johnson and Lanphier each had two hits.

Edinburgh 12, Southwestern 7

At Southwestern, the Lancers scored seven runs in the sixth inning to secure the Mid-Hoosier Conference win.

Milas Burkman earned the win in relief of starter Gabe Bennett, who worked into the sixth inning and struck out 13 Spartans.

James Oliver took the loss for Southwestern (1-10, 1-8 MHC). He allowed nine hits and struck out six in five innings.

Caleb McCracken had a triple and three RBI for Southwestern. John Karr had two RBI.

Jared Myers finished with two hits and four RBI for Edinburgh (9-5-1, 3-3 MHC).

Waldron 7, North Decatur 6

Hunter Dodson was hit by a pitch with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning in a tie game and Keith Settles doubled to score him to secure the MHC win at Waldron.

Jared Brooks got the final out in the top of the seventh and earned the win after the walkoff victory. Jordan Bennett struck out seven in 6.2 innings of work.

The Mohawks improved to 9-6 (3-4 MHC) while the Class A, No. 10 Chargers dropped to 7-6 (5-1 MHC).

Boys golf

Greenfield-Central 166, Triton Central 205

At Hawk’s Tail, Chase Chandler led the Tigers with a 47, good enough for fourth place in the individual standings.

Also competing for Triton Central were Derreck Uhls (48), Max Ray (51) and Taggy Goul (59).

Tyler Young earned the medalist honor for Greenfield-Central with a 37.

Softball

Shelbyville 3, Mt. Vernon 2

Cheyenne Eads and the Golden Bears stayed in contention for a HHC title with a road win in Fortville.

Eads had two hits, scored two runs, including the game winner on a fifth-inning Addison Stieneker single, and notched 15 strikeouts in a complete-game performance that improved Shelbyville to 12-5 (3-1 HHC).

Graci Hines scattered seven hits and three walks to keep the Marauders (5-9, 3-3 HHC) in the contest. Shelby Rakosky had three hits.

Triton Central 6, Monrovia 0

At Monrovia, Brylie Couch pitched a three-hit shutout to get the Tigers another ICC victory.

Lilli Fillippinie hit two home runs and drove in three runs for Triton Central (5-6, 2-3 ICC). Couch and Jalynn Keith each had two hits and combined to score three runs.

Tylynn Secuskie took the loss for Monrovia (3-7, 2-2 ICC).

Morristown 21, South Decatur 3

At Morristown, the host Yellow Jackets scored 12 runs in the first inning and cruised to the Mid-Hoosier Conference victory.

Abby Hawk had three hits for Morristown (4-7, 1-4 MHC), drove in three runs and pitched a complete game to earn the win in the pitcher’s circle.

Nevaeh Cox had three hits and scored three runs while Ayvah Weir had three RBI.

Waldron 11, Oldenburg Academy 7

At Oldenburg Academy Monday, Audrey Hogg had two hits and two RBI while Alyssa Benson walked three times and scored three times.

Benson allowed two hits and struck out nine to lead the Mohawks (5-2) over the Twisters (2-10).

Girls tennis

Triton Central 5, Beech Grove 0

The Tigers lost five games total in sweeping the Hornets.

At No. 1 singles, Maryrose Felling defeated Randy Underwood, 6-0, 6-2.

Ellie Gast was victorious at No. 2 singles over Eva Kidwell, 6-0, 6-0.

Anniston Evans bested Danica Schell at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-0.

At No. 1 doubles, Lauren Gant and Audrey Canter topped Chloe Hendershott and Lilly Bailey, 6-1, 6-1.

And Neve Kahler and Estelle Gearlds defeated Riley Wynn and Addy Binkley at No. 2 doubles, 6-1, 6-0.

Triton Central improved to 8-5 this season.

Emily Tyree defeated Kayla Kramer at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-3 to secure the Mohawks’ only victory.

At No. 3 singles, Greensburg’s Annie Pumphrey bested Riley Thurston, 7-6, 2-6, 10-3. Greensburg won the other three matches in straight sets.

Boys track

Shelbyville 84, Columbus East 51, Brown County 29

The Golden Bears had 10 event wins to top the Olympians and Eagles.

Individual event winners were Joaquin Delgado (18.77 in 110 hurdles), Christian Powell (54.74 in 400), Isaac Zermeno (46.57 in 300 hurdles), Ben Price (2:14.49 in 800 and 19-2 in long jump), Shia Veach (10:38.57 in 3,200), Ethan Lambert (156-6 in discus), Logan Page (5-8 in high jump) and Kamden Turner (8-6 in pole vault).

The quartet of John Turner, Kamden Turner, Page and Powell won the 1,600 in 3:42.43.

Girls track

Columbus East 107, Shelbyville 51, Brown County 6

Shelbyville had three event winners.

Sonora O’Connor won the 100 hurdles in 18.25.

Aerin Garcia-Santiago was first across the finish line in the 3,200 (13:40.24).

Chevelle Prather captured first-place points in the pole vault after clearing 6-0.

Boys volleyball

Columbus East def. Shelbyville, 25-20, 25-22, 25-12

At Garrett Gymnasium, Jayion Grice led the Golden Bears with six kills and 22 digs. Damon Badgley finished with five kills.

Brooklyn Carlton won three events to lead Morristown to a Shelby County Girls Track and Field title while Brayden Wilkins won three individual titles and helped secure first-place points in the 400-meter relay to propel Triton Central to the boys team title Tuesday at Waldron.

Carlton won both hurdling events and the high jump to help the Yellow Jackets amass 80 team points and held off Triton Central (72 points) for the team title. Southwestern finished third (36) and Waldron was fourth (25).

Carlton crossed the finish line first in the 100-meter hurdles (17.75 seconds) and 300 hurdles (52.76) and won the high jump with a best clearance of four feet, eight inches.

Also winning events for Morristown were Audrey Vandyke (14:44.18 in 3,200), Kindall Dorsey (91-9 in discus) and Anna Osborne (13-11.25 in long jump). Morristown also win the 3,200 relay in 15:09 with Grace McLaughlin, Savannah Theobald, Vandyke and Osborne.

Triton Central won five events including two relay races. Individual winners were Vivian Blye in the 100 (13.06) and 200 (28.11) and Elaina Maurice in the 400 (1:08.37).

Blye ran with Allie Griffith, Farah Coen and Lydia Hough in winning the 400 relay (54.32). Maurice teamed with Mckenzie Bryant, Brynne Aukerman and Bella Ball to win the 1,600 relay (4:44.76).

Waldron’s Riley Price took first place in the 800 (2:43.87) and 1,600 (6:15.15) and her teammate, Brooklyn Milbourn, won the shot put title with a throw of 31-6.

Wilkins (photo), a Franklin College football recruit, captured first-place points for Triton Central in the 100 (11.13), 200 (23.02) and long jump (19-7.5). The senior ran with Zeke Robertson, Braden Brown and Cash Compton in winning the 400 relay (44.77).

That effort helped the Tigers rack up 93 points to capture the team title over Waldron (54), Morristown (47) and Southwestern (30).

Triton Central also got individual wins from Ethan Cales (16.49 in 110 hurdles), Zeke Robertson (43.1 in 300 hurdles), William Baugh (47-0.5 in shot put) and Ben Wilkins (128-9 in discus).

For Waldron, Will Larrison won the 800 in 2:14 and Lucas Shaw took first in the high jump (5-8). Larrison joined with Jared Crosby, Tad Crosby and Max Jones to win the 1,600 relay in 3:43.61.

Southwestern’s lone event win came from Jackson Bentz, who crossed the finish line first in 12:03.27.

Morristown’s Lakshdeep Singh won the 1,600 in 5:11.94 and teamed with Ryan Crisman, Parker Theobald and Hunter Biddle to win the 3,200 relay in 9:09.23.
